A Glimpse of Hong Kong's Development
Sahaja Yoga in Hong Kong began with the first programs given by Shri Mataji in 1981, although a small group of practitioners was not formed until 1989. In 1991, an Australian family moved to Hong Kong to help establish a Sahaja Yoga centre. In 1992, Shri Mataji visited Hong Kong and held a public program attended by around 300 people. Following this, a small collective of approximately 25 practitioners was formed.
Towards the end of 1992, a Sahaja Yoga centre was established in Happy Valley, which became the focal point for Sahaja Yoga activities in Hong Kong. In addition to the centre, weekly classes were conducted in various locations across Hong Kong, including the Hong Kong City Hall and Sha Tin Town Hall. Shri Mataji subsequently visited Hong Kong in 1994, 1996, 1998, and 2000, further nurturing the growth of Sahaja Yoga in the region.Since the early development of Sahaja Yoga in Hong Kong, regular weekly public meditation classes and collective gatherings have continued without interruption since 1991.
In early 2018, a group of ten long-time practitioners, each with over 20 years of experience in Sahaja Yoga meditation, initiated the re-establishment of the organisation in response to serious operational issues. The entity previously known as “Sahaja Yoga (Life Eternal Hong Kong) Limited” had been taken over by external parties and no longer represented the Sahaja Yoga collective. This entity has no affiliation or relationship with the present organisation. With the support of over 60 members, representing more than two-thirds of the collective, the Hong Kong Sahaja Yoga Cultural Association was formally registered as a non-profit organisation.
The Association is based in Hong Kong and connected with practitioners across China and worldwide. It is dedicated to following the teachings of Shri Mataji by freely sharing and spreading the knowledge and techniques of Sahaja Yoga, as well as her message of love. A centre was soon established in Tsun Yip Lane, Kwun Tong, and the Association received recognition from both the China Council and the World Foundation. A new website, www.freemeditation.hk, was also launched to support public outreach.
The Hong Kong Sahaja Yoga Cultural Association continues to offer regular free public meditation classes and collective activities, upholding the spirit of voluntary service and making Sahaja Yoga accessible to all.
