A Glimpse of Hong Kong's Development

Hong Kong Sahaja Yoga began in 1981, when Shri Mataji personally came to Hong Kong to conduct the first public programs. It was not until 1989 that a small local group of practitioners gradually formed. In 1991, an Australian family moved to Hong Kong and helped establish a Sahaja Yoga center. In 1992, Shri Mataji visited Hong Kong again and gave a public lecture that attracted about 300 participants, after which a stable group of around 25 practitioners continued regular meetings.

By the end of 1992, the first Sahaja Yoga center in Hong Kong was opened in Happy Valley, becoming the main hub for Sahaja Yoga activities at that time. In addition to this fixed center, the team also started weekly ongoing courses at various locations, including Hong Kong City Hall in Central and Sha Tin Town Hall. Shri Mataji subsequently visited Hong Kong several times in 1994, 1996, 1998 and 2000, continually supporting the growth of Sahaja Yoga in the city. Since 1991, weekly free public meditation classes and collective meetings have never been interrupted in Hong Kong.

In the early stage of development, local practitioners used “Sahaja Yoga (Life Eternal Hong Kong) Limited” as a registered non-profit structure to handle administrative matters and public activities. As the Hong Kong Sahaja Yoga team gradually expanded, members felt that the existing legal framework, management model and representation of the local collective all needed renewal.

In early 2018, ten senior practitioners with more than twenty years of experience in Sahaja Yoga, together with a number of local members (including the Australian Sahaja Yogis who had originally helped to promote Sahaja Yoga in Hong Kong), registered the “Hong Kong Sahaja Culture Association” with the support of more than two-thirds of the members (over sixty people in total. The Association maintains long-term links with the Council in Mainland China and the World Foundation, and is currently the only non-profit organization officially promoting Sahaja Yoga in Hong Kong. Our premises are located in Tsun Yip Lane, Kwun Tong, and our official website freemeditation.hk provides information on courses and activities, continuing the tradition of free meditation classes and collective meetings that has been upheld since the 1990s.

At present, the Association offers regular beginner, intermediate and ongoing meditation classes at our Kwun Tong Tsun Yip Lane premises, providing practitioners with continuous opportunities to deepen their Sahaja Yoga meditation. We also run introductory classes on Peng Chau, launch online courses from time to time, and collaborate with various social service organizations, companies and clubs to offer meditation experience programs, so that more people can freely experience the benefits of meditation and collective practice in different venues.

Whether or not you have any prior experience with meditation, you are welcome to choose the courses that best suit your pace and needs, and personally experience the inner peace that Sahaja Yoga can bring.
