Why Adult Men, and Why Blood Glucose?

For many adult men, heavy workload, social drinking, and lack of exercise are almost standard lifestyle features.Over time, one of the most sensitive indicators affected by this lifestyle is fasting blood glucose – the level of sugar in your blood after you have not eaten for several hours, usually measured in the morning.

Doctors like to look at fasting blood glucose because it acts like a mirror, giving a quick overview of how well your body handles sugar and how close you might be to conditions like prediabetes, diabetes, or metabolic syndrome.The question this study explored is: if we do not change medication or deliberately add exercise, but simply introduce a regular meditation practice, will fasting blood glucose change?


What Kind of Study Is This?

This study was published in 2016 in the Scholars Journal of Applied Medical Sciences and was conducted in the biochemistry department of a medical college in India.The researchers recruited 200 healthy male volunteers aged 20–50 years, with no known acute or chronic illnesses, and no background in yoga or structured sports training, to keep the sample as “clean” as possible.

To further reduce interference, they excluded:

  • Men with prior yoga or professional sports training

  • Men with chronic diseases

  • Chronic smokers and heavy alcohol users

  • Men taking vitamin or anabolic supplements.

All participants underwent an initial baseline assessment:

  • Age, height, and weight were recorded

  • They completed a questionnaire about diet, physical activity, and family history

  • On test days, they avoided food, tea, coffee, and nicotine for at least two hours before blood sampling, and then gave a fasting venous blood sample.


A Scientific Design: Control Group vs Meditation Group

The 200 participants were divided into two main groups of 100 men each.

  • Control group (Group I):Continued their usual lifestyle, without yoga, meditation, or new exercise programs.

  • Meditation group (Group II):Started a regular Sahaja Yoga meditation practice.

In the meditation group, practice was organized as follows:

  • For the first 5 consecutive days, they attended 45-minute guided Sahaja Yoga sessions led by experienced practitioners.

  • After that, they joined weekly follow-up sessions including meditation practice, instructional videos, individual guidance, and Q&A to help them deepen the experience.

Both main groups were then subdivided by age:

  • Subgroup A: 20–35 years (50 men in each main group)

  • Subgroup B: 36–50 years (50 men in each main group)

  • Subgroup C: All 20–50-year-old participants combined, to look at overall trends.

This is a classic controlled design:

  • The control group shows how blood glucose naturally fluctuates when nothing new is introduced.

  • The meditation group shows what happens when Sahaja Yoga is added on top of an otherwise similar lifestyle.


How Was Blood Glucose Measured?

The study focused on fasting blood glucose, expressed in mg/dl.To measure it, the researchers used a standard laboratory method known as the GOD/POD method (Glucose Oxidase/Peroxidase Method):

  • Glucose is oxidized by the enzyme glucose oxidase into gluconic acid and hydrogen peroxide.

  • Hydrogen peroxide, in the presence of peroxidase, reacts with a chromogenic compound to form a red-colored product.

  • The intensity of this red color is measured at 505 nm and is directly proportional to the glucose concentration.

You do not need to remember the chemistry; what matters is that this is a widely used, well-established method in clinical laboratories worldwide.


How Long Did the Study Last, and What Time Points Were Measured?

The researchers tracked fasting blood glucose at three key time points:

  1. Baseline – before any intervention

  2. Day 40 – after about six weeks

  3. Day 90 – after about three months

Both the control group and the meditation group had blood drawn at these same time points for comparison.


What Happened in the Control Group (No Meditation)?

In the control group, where men continued their usual lifestyle without meditation, fasting blood glucose remained fairly stable over the 90 days.

For example:

  • Ages 20–35 (Subgroup A):

    • Baseline: about 79.1 mg/dl

    • Day 40: about 79.6 mg/dl

    • Day 90: about 79.7 mg/dl

  • Ages 36–50 (Subgroup B):

    • Baseline: about 79.9 mg/dl

    • Day 40: about 81.3 mg/dl

    • Day 90: about 81.4 mg/dl

Statistically, these fluctuations were not significant.In other words, over three months, doing nothing different led only to small, random variations in fasting blood glucose.


What Happened in the Meditation Group (Sahaja Yoga)?

In the meditation group, the pattern was clearly different.

Younger Men (20–35 Years)

  • Baseline: 78.99 mg/dl

  • Day 40: 77.75 mg/dl

  • Day 90: 75.92 mg/dl

Over three months, fasting blood glucose dropped by roughly 3 mg/dl on average.This change was statistically highly significant (p < 0.001) at both 40 days and 90 days, meaning it is very unlikely to be due to chance.

Middle-Aged Men (36–50 Years)

  • Baseline: 81.52 mg/dl

  • Day 40: 79.93 mg/dl

  • Day 90: 77.47 mg/dl

Here the decrease was even larger, more than 4 mg/dl on average, and again highly significant (p < 0.001).

All Ages Combined (20–50 Years)

For the entire meditation group:

  • Baseline: 80.26 mg/dl

  • Day 40: 78.84 mg/dl

  • Day 90: 76.70 mg/dl

You can think of this as a gradual decline from about 80 mg/dl to around 77 mg/dl over 90 days.For healthy individuals who already have normal blood glucose, this is a clear and directional shift rather than random noise.


What Does “p < 0.001” Mean in Simple Terms?

In statistics, the p-value helps us judge whether an observed change might just be a random fluctuation.A p-value less than 0.001 means that there is less than a 0.1% chance that the observed difference happened purely by accident.

So when the researchers say that blood glucose reductions in the meditation group had p < 0.001, they mean:

  • It is very unlikely that these reductions were due to random variation alone.

  • It is reasonable to associate the change with the meditation intervention, while still recognizing that this is one study with its own limitations.


Why Did Middle-Aged Men Show a Larger Decrease?

The study found that men aged 36–50 experienced a greater reduction in fasting blood glucose than those aged 20–35.The authors suggest that this may be linked to differences in baseline metabolic status:

  • Middle-aged men often carry higher stress loads, work longer hours, and move less.

  • Their sympathetic nervous system tends to be more active, and their baseline blood glucose may be slightly higher.

In such a context, a practice that lowers stress and rebalances the autonomic nervous system – like meditation – may produce more visible changes in measurable markers such as fasting blood glucose.

For men particularly concerned about blood sugar around midlife, this is a meaningful hint:the closer you are to metabolic risk, the more your body may “respond” to interventions in stress and lifestyle.


Sahaja Yoga: From Mental Silence to Thoughtless Awareness

This study specifically used Sahaja Yoga as the meditation method.Sahaja Yoga has been practiced worldwide since the 1970s and is often described as producing:

  • A state of mental silence – the mind becomes quiet

  • While remaining fully alert and conscious

  • Accompanied by a sense of relaxation, positive mood, and benevolence.

Within the Sahaja Yoga tradition, this is often called Thoughtless Awareness:

  • You remain awake and aware, but the usual stream of thoughts temporarily settles.

  • This state is understood to be linked with better balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, and with reduced stress hormone output.

How Might Meditation Influence Blood Glucose?

Does This Mean Meditation Can Replace Medication or Diet Changes?

No.

This particular study was conducted on healthy men, not on patients with diabetes or other metabolic diseases.They were not on glucose-lowering medications, and the study does not test the effects of stopping or changing medical treatment.

A more accurate interpretation is:

  • For adult men concerned about blood sugar, Sahaja Yoga and similar meditation practices represent a scientifically promising supportive tool.

  • They can complement doctor-recommended measures such as diet, exercise, and medication.

  • They should not be seen as substitutes for professional medical care.
