Why is Everyone Looking for a “Brain Boost”?

In today’s information-heavy world, many of us are asking the same question: “How can I think faster, stay sharper, and be more intelligent?” Most of the answers sold to us come in bottles: brain pills, nootropics, “smart supplements” for memory, focus, or performance.

But is there another path—one that doesn’t start with a capsule, but with a change in how our mind functions? This is exactly where Sahaja Yoga Meditation (SYM) offers a very interesting possibility.


What Is Sahaja Yoga? More Than Just Relaxation

Sahaja Yoga was founded in 1970 by Shri Mataji Nirmala Srivastava and is now practiced freely in over 140 countries, including India. Unlike many popular techniques that mainly emphasise relaxation or breathing, Sahaja Yoga Meditation focuses on helping practitioners reach a state called mental silence or thoughtless awareness.

In simple terms, thoughtless awareness has three key features:

  • Your mind is awake and clear, but the usual stream of thoughts is quietened

  • You remain conscious and aware, not drowsy or “zoned out”

  • Attention becomes more stable; the inner state feels calm yet alert

Previous research has linked regular Sahaja Yoga practice with several benefits: reduced depression and anxiety, better psychological well-being, and even changes in brain structure and function, such as increased grey matter volume and altered connectivity patterns.All this raises an intriguing question: could this special state of mental silence actually make us more intelligent?


What Did This Study Want to Find Out?

The research article titled “Impact of Sahaja Yoga Meditation on Intelligence in Relation to Different Age Groups” set out with a very direct objective:

Do people who practice Sahaja Yoga Meditation score higher on intelligence tests than those who do not? And does this effect differ by age group?

The focus here is cognitive intelligence—abilities like understanding, reasoning, and problem-solving—rather than school grades or academic performance alone.


How Was the Study Conducted? (Plain-Language Overview)

1. Who Took Part?

The study was carried out in Raipur, in the state of Chhattisgarh, India, with a total of 300 adult participants:

  • 150 regular practitioners of Sahaja Yoga Meditation (SYM)

  • 150 non-practitioners (no SYM practice)

To examine age effects, the researchers divided them into two age ranges:

  • 20–30 years: 75 SYM practitioners, 75 non-practitioners

  • 30–40 years: 75 SYM practitioners, 75 non-practitioners

2. How Did They Measure “Intelligence”?

The researchers used the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS), adapted by Prabha Ramalinga Swamy for the Indian context.

WAIS is a widely used psychological test that assesses multiple aspects of intelligence:

  • Verbal understanding and language skills

  • Logical reasoning

  • Working memory and short-term memory

  • Visual-spatial ability and processing speed

You can think of it as a comprehensive “cognitive fitness test” rather than a single simple IQ number.

3. What Kind of Statistical Analysis Did They Use?

To analyse the data, the researchers used a method called two-way factorial ANOVA (Analysis of Variance):

  • Factor 1: Group – SYM practitioners vs non-practitioners

  • Factor 2: Age Group – 20–30 vs 30–40 years

  • Outcome (dependent variable): Intelligence score (WAIS)

In everyday language, ANOVA is like a mathematical magnifying glass that helps us see:

  • Whether the differences we observe between groups are big enough that they are unlikely to be just random chance

  • Which factors (meditation, age, or both) contribute most strongly to those differences

Before running ANOVA, the researchers used Levene’s test to check whether the spread of scores across groups was similar enough for this analysis to be valid; the test result suggested that this assumption was satisfied.


What Did the Numbers Show? (Key Results)

  • Main effect of age group:

  • Interaction of SYM × age group:

    • F = 1.332, p = 0.249 (not significant)

In plain English:

  • A p-value tells us how likely it is that the observed difference could have arisen purely by chance.

  • A common rule of thumb is that p < 0.05 means there is less than a 5% chance the result is random; we then treat the difference as statistically meaningful.

Here, the effect of SYM has a p-value well below 0.05, which means the difference in intelligence scores between meditators and non-meditators is very unlikely to be a coincidence.

2. What Is Partial Eta Squared, and Why Does 0.72 Matter?

The study also reports an effect size called Partial Eta Squared, with a value of 0.72 for the group factor (SYM vs non-SYM).

This number can be interpreted as:

Around 72% of the variance in intelligence scores can be explained by whether or not a person practices Sahaja Yoga Meditation.

In many psychological studies:

  • Around 0.01 is considered a small effect

  • Around 0.06 is medium

  • Around 0.14 is large

So a value of 0.72 is extraordinarily large. It suggests an extremely strong separation between meditators and non-meditators—though of course, it also invites further studies to replicate and examine these results in different populations.


Does Age Matter? Is Meditation Only for the Young?

The analysis shows that age does have a noticeable effec

  • The F-value for age group is 6.343 with p = 0.012, meaning older participants (30–40) tend to perform somewhat better than younger ones (20–30), possibly due to life experience or cognitive development over time.

However, an important finding is this:

  • The interaction between SYM practice and age group is not significant (F = 1.332, p = 0.249).

In simple terms:

Whether you are 20–30 or 30–40, the benefit of SYM for intelligence is roughly similar. Both younger and older adults appear to gain in a comparable way.

This suggests that Sahaja Yoga is not just “for young brains” or “for mature brains”; it seems to support cognitive performance across the adult age span studied here.


Mental Silence / Thoughtless Awareness: A Possible Key Mechanism

In the discussion, the authors highlight that what makes Sahaja Yoga distinctive is its emphasis on thoughtless awareness rather than simply “relaxing” or “watching thoughts”.

Seen in this light, the current intelligence study can be viewed as an important bridge between “inner experience” and “outer performance”.


Meditation vs Brain Pills: Not Either–Or, But a Bigger Picture

“So does this mean I should throw away all my brain supplements and only meditate?”

This study doesn’t make that claim. Instead, it does something subtler but very powerful:

  • It introduces a scientifically tested alternative path for cognitive enhancement—through cultivating mental silence rather than relying solely on biochemical interventions.

  • It reminds us that brain plasticity is shaped not only by what we swallow, but also by our states of consciousness and patterns of attention.

From a cost–benefit perspective:

  • Supplements require ongoing purchase, effects can vary by individual, and long-term benefits are sometimes modest or unclear.

  • Meditation, especially in traditions like Sahaja Yoga where teachings are offered freely, has very low financial cost, minimal side effects, and can simultaneously improve emotional and spiritual well-being.

If you think in investment terms:

Brain pills may be like a short-term trade,whereas meditation is more like a long-term investment in mental infrastructure.

Both can coexist—but it becomes difficult to ignore the value proposition of a practice that is low-cost, low-risk, and supported by empirical data.
